A guide from WoofWellDogsWater Setups
Lead Off. Paws Wiped. Fresh Water Ready?
Your post-walk routine probably covers the lead, the paws and the treat. Here's how to make water part of it too.
Lead off. Paws wiped. Treat given.
Your dog heads straight for the water bowl, and finds it half empty, warm, with a layer of fur on top from this morning.
You've nailed every part of the walk routine except the one your dog needs most.
After a walk, water matters most
Dogs lose water through panting, especially on hot South African days. The PDSA stresses that dogs should always have access to fresh water, particularly in warm weather.
But a bowl filled at 7 am isn't fresh by 5 pm. It's warm, it's low, and it's collected whatever floated past.
The American Kennel Club also warns that unwashed bowls can build up bacteria.

Fresh water waiting when you walk in
The American Kennel Club explains that fountains keep water circulating through a filter, so it stays fresher.
With 2.2 litres in the bowl, there's plenty left for that big post-walk drink. And the lit window tells you at a glance whether it needs a top-up.
The short version
- Dogs lose water panting on walks.
- Dogs should always have fresh water, especially when it's hot.
- A bowl filled in the morning isn't fresh by evening.
- A fountain keeps water filtered and ready.
WoofWell vs. a water bowl
| Bowl | WoofWell | |
|---|---|---|
| The water | Sits still all day | Moves all day |
| Fur and crumbs | Float or sink in it | Caught by a filter pad |
| Your dog's interest | Easy to walk past | A stream they notice |
| Holds | A few hundred ml | 2.2 litres |
| Material | Often scratchy plastic | Stainless steel |
| Water level | Noticed when empty | Lit window shows it |

Quick answers before you decide
Will my dog actually use it? Most pets are curious about moving water straight away. Some take a few days. Put it somewhere quiet, keep the old bowl nearby for the first few days, and let your dog choose.
Is it noisy? No. The pump runs at about 30 dB. That's quieter than a whisper, so it won't keep anyone up at night.
Is it a pain to clean? Not at all. Rinse the steel bowl once a week and swap the filter pad every 3 to 4 weeks. There are no hidden corners for slime to hide in.
What does it plug into? It runs on a USB cable, so it works with any phone charger plug you already have.
Try it for yourself
Finish the walk routine properly. Have fresh, flowing water waiting at the door.
