A guide from WoofWellDogsEveryday Care

Your Dog's Water Was Clean This Morning. Look at It Now.

Fresh at 7 am. By 5 pm there's fur on top and a few crumbs at the bottom. Here's what's going on, and what actually helps.

A dog's water bowl with a few hairs and crumbs in it

7 am: you fill your dog's water bowl. Crystal clear.

5 pm: there's fur floating on top. Some soggy kibble at the bottom. A slobbery film around the rim.

Your dog drinks from it anyway. Dogs aren't picky. But should they have to be?

A still bowl turns into soup fast

Dogs are messy drinkers. Every drink adds a bit of saliva and whatever was on their face.

The American Kennel Club warns that shared and unwashed water bowls can build up bacteria. That slimy feeling on the inside of a bowl? That's what it looks like.

Topping up doesn't help. You're adding fresh water to dirty water.

Water that keeps itself fresher

The American Kennel Club explains that pet fountains keep water circulating through a filter, which helps keep it fresher and cleaner.

A filter pad catches fur and bits of food as the water flows. The water pouring out of the spout stays clearer all day.

You still rinse it weekly. But no more fishing fur out of the bowl at the end of the day.

The short version

  • Dog bowls collect fur, food and slobber within hours.
  • Unwashed bowls can build up bacteria.
  • Topping up adds clean water to dirty water.
  • A fountain filters the water all day.

Quick answers before you decide

Will my dog actually use it? Most pets are curious about moving water straight away. Some take a few days. Put it somewhere quiet, keep the old bowl nearby for the first few days, and let your dog choose.

Is it noisy? No. The pump runs at about 30 dB. That's quieter than a whisper, so it won't keep anyone up at night.

Is it a pain to clean? Not at all. Rinse the steel bowl once a week and swap the filter pad every 3 to 4 weeks. There are no hidden corners for slime to hide in.

What does it plug into? It runs on a USB cable, so it works with any phone charger plug you already have.

Try it for yourself

Your dog deserves better than 5 pm soup. Give it water that stays fresh.
