A guide from WoofWellDogsEveryday Care

You've Checked the Pavement. Have You Checked Their Water?

You already test the tar with your hand and walk early. Here's the water side of a South African summer.

You check the tar with the back of your hand. You walk before 8 am. You know the signs of heatstroke.

But have you checked your dog's water today?

Not just whether there's water. Whether it's fresh, cool and enough to last until you get home.

Summer heat and still water don't mix

The PDSA lists access to fresh water as one of the key ways to keep dogs safe in the heat.

A bowl left outside or in a sunny room warms up fast. It gathers dust, fur and bugs. And a thirsty dog can empty a small bowl long before you're back.

A summer water setup you can trust

A fountain keeps water moving and filtered, so it doesn't sit and collect dirt in the heat. Its 2.2 L bowl holds far more than a typical bowl.

It runs on USB, so you can plug it into a power bank during load-shedding. Put it in the coolest room in the house, out of direct sun.

The short version

  • Fresh water is one of the best ways to protect dogs in the heat.
  • A still bowl warms up and collects dirt fast.
  • Small bowls can run dry before you're home.
  • A 2.2 L fountain keeps water moving and filtered.

Quick answers before you decide

Will my dog actually use it? Most pets are curious about moving water straight away. Some take a few days. Put it somewhere quiet, keep the old bowl nearby for the first few days, and let your dog choose.

Is it noisy? No. The pump runs at about 30 dB. That's quieter than a whisper, so it won't keep anyone up at night.

Is it a pain to clean? Not at all. Rinse the steel bowl once a week and swap the filter pad every 3 to 4 weeks. There are no hidden corners for slime to hide in.

What does it plug into? It runs on a USB cable, so it works with any phone charger plug you already have.
